Desmoid Tumor: Factors affecting Recurrence Rate

Abstract
Although desmoid tumor is generally known as a benign neoplasm, its aggressive local invasiveness and frequent recurrence indicate its position lying between the benignancy and malignancy. To analyze the factors that affect the recurrence in
desmoid
tumor, we have made a clinico-pathological study. We had reviewed the 52 cases of desmoid tumor that were operated and removed at Seoul National University Hospital during a 22 years period, from January 1971 to January 1992.
Recurrence was not related to patients sex, age at the time of the first operation, location and size. The tumor masses occurred most frequently at the third decade female and in the extremity with an average size of 521 cm3. Twenty four out of
34
cases
that were operated and followed for more than 2 years recurred after 34 months in average.
Wide excision with pathologically clear resection margins showed least recurrence rate.
Among pathological findings of the desmoid tumor degree of hyline fibrosis was significantly related to increased chance of recurrence. Adjuvant therapy combined with resection was caried out in several cases without definite beneficial results.
We conclude that the surgical treatment of desmoid tumor should be a wide excision of the tumor with pathologically proven free resection margins.
